What happens at the Undergraduate Academy?

The student experience: a timeline

  • Induction materials and process

On this website you will find all the documentation, links and information you need.

    More info

Your Student Resources include: administrative tasks required prior to your induction; policies and procedures you will need to follow as students at the WAHT Undergraduate Academy; information and resources required specifically for your placement.

The Undergraduate Coordinators on our Administrative Team arrange your induction and will be available throughout your placement as a point of contact. You may have landed on this website via a Welcome email, which includes login information. If so, then you can access the Induction Hub and your Placement-specific information here:

  • Meeting supervisors and CTFs

You will be allocated a supervisor for the duration of your placement, and have teaching and support from our Clinical Teaching Fellows.

    More info

Your supervisors are senior doctors (such as Registrar, SAS or Consultant doctors) who work clinically across a range of specialities but also have a role as faculty at the Academy alongside their clinical work. The supervisor role differs slightly depending on your Medical School and placement (and this difference is reflected in the title: Birmingham students: you’ll have SATs or CATs; Warwick: Clinical Supervisors; Three Counties: Educational Supervisors). But in all cases your supervisor is here to provide you with support, help and guidance during your placement. It is your supervisor who will sign off your end-of-placement reports.

You will also meet our team of Clinical Teaching Fellows: doctors at varying levels of training from post-Foundation, to fully qualified and holding a CCT. Depending on your placement, you may be allocated one CTF or a group of CTFs for regular bedside teaching and tutorials, or you may see them on a more ad hoc basis, supporting you in simulation or other teaching sessions. They are able to support you with clinical knowledge, history taking and examinations as well as communication skills.

  • Teaching and practical experience

You will learn through a range of teaching modalities including bedside teaching, tutorials, clinical skills workshops and simulation sessions.

    Find out more

The teaching you receive will be tailored to suit your course and your placement requirements, in accordance with the varying course structures and ethos of each of our three partner Medical Schools. But in all cases you will have the opportunity to visit various wards and undertake supervised skills. A skills nurse is available daily via a bleep system should you need further advice and support.

In-person simulations provide opportunities to practise history taking, examinations and assessment of acutely unwell patients, as well as practising your communication skills and understanding the impact that “human factors” has on performance. In-person simulation sessions can be supplemented by Oxford Medical Simulations via VR headset or laptop for additional practice where appropriate.

  • Your feedback and the future

We greatly value student feedback, working with medical schools to ensure that your experiences, ideas, and any concerns are heard and acted upon wherever appropriate.

    Find out more

You will be sent an opportunity to provide feedback as your placement completes, and we encourage all students to complete this process.

We know students given the opportunity love to come back to us, for example returning to the Trust for postgraduate training, or joining the faculty. Wherever your future career takes you we want your time at WAHT Undergraduate Academy to be a shining moment in your journey to becoming a doctor.
